Ordering Irish civil certificates for an FBR application

The Irish-born ancestor's birth record is usually the anchor. Marriage and death certificates may also be required by the current FBR checklist or may be necessary to connect later names and identities.

Start with the full name at the event, approximate date, place, parents' names, and registration district where known. Family trees and index images are research aids; the application ordinarily needs the official certificate identified in the Department's checklist.

1. Confirm the event type and the person whose record is required.
2. Gather the strongest identifying details before beginning the order.
3. Use the Government of Ireland certificate service linked in the primary sources below.
4. Select the certificate product appropriate for official use rather than a research-only image or index result.
5. Enter names and locations as they would have appeared when the event was registered.
6. Retain the order confirmation and compare the delivered certificate against the family line before using it in the application.

• Search Irish and English variants of a given name.
• Distinguish a county from a civil registration district.
• Use parents' names, occupation, townland, or later marriage records to separate people with similar names.
• Check whether the event predates civil registration or whether an adoption record changes the route.
• Treat an index match as a lead, not proof that the certificate belongs to the correct ancestor.

Compare the certificate to every later record in the chain. Note spelling differences, maiden names, age discrepancies, registration districts, and the parents named on the record.

If the delivered record does not name the expected parents or otherwise conflicts with the chain, stop and resolve the identity before completing the FBR application. A genuine certificate for the wrong person is still the wrong evidence.
